The History of CapRock Hardscape, LTD

Contractors have long-endured the tedious chore of accumulating the necessary materials for their projects. If you have been involved in the construction industry for as many years as Danny Ratliff, you might recall that decades ago before the existence of home-improvement stores, it took contractors a lot more effort to purchase supplies because the items they needed weren’t available at the same location.  If lumber was needed, contractors had to go to a lumber yard.  If hardware or plumbing supplies were needed, contractors were forced to make additional trips to each of those specialty stores as well.

This was a very frustrating ordeal for Danny because for hours at a time  it pulled him away from the jobsite of his own newly-established company, Ratliff Masonry.  This time-consuming chore was unacceptable for Danny but he was developing an idea for a solution.  After having sought the opinion and advice of his peers---and based on their enthusiastic responses---he made another major business decision.  In 1989, Danny opened the doors to his second company, a construction retail store, PDQ Masonry & Steel Supply.

Operating out of a tiny, one-room storefront, PDQ began selling basic masonry supplies such as mortar mix, rebar, angle iron, wall-ties, hand tools, wheelbarrows and brick saws.  The store also offered customers revolving credit accounts and delivery to any site within the DFW area.  The store relocated several times over the next two decades---each time to newer and larger facilities. As each PDQ Masonry & Steel Supply location increased in size, the product line variety increased as well, including materials equally beneficial to commercial landscapers, homeowners and city entities.

We agree, companies don’t usually change their name after twenty years of steady growth, but as time progressed for PDQ and the store grew, the original name of the store grew more outdated and not as inclusive. As a result, the new business name of Caprock Hardscape was then chosen to help reflect those changes. Please call us either name---it won’t change a thing because the history of both names are literally one and the same.

About CEO Danny O. Ratliff

Danny started his masonry business in 1975 bricking homes, chimneys, and mailboxes. He revolutionized the brick thin wall in the 1980s and created the vision behind what Ratliff is today.  During the savings and loan crisis of the 80s, Danny earned his pilot’s license to make ends meet.  He became a pilot with Southwest Airlines in 1990, and is now an active captain with Southwest flying 737s on weekends.  His hard work and determination is a testament to Ratliff’s success.
